Mythos Radler
A refreshing Greek shandy from Olympic Brewery
You don’t expect mythology in a bottle of beer - but Crete has a way of surprising you.
It is not often that one can travel through time and myth with a short climb, but it can be done in Crete. And when you return, a Mythos Radler is just the pint to welcome you back. Light, sweet, and easy to drink it may not be a craft beer -but it is a splendid refresher on a hot Greek afternoon. The lemon aroma leaps out, and the pour glows hazy yellow with a touch of froth.
The first note on your palate is sweet lemonade, balanced by a mild malt bill and a whisper of sour underneath. Served cold, it shines in the sun, bathing your table in golden light. At only 2% ABV, you can enjoy more than one without worry. It’s not complex, but it finishes clean - refreshing as waking from a full night’s sleep.
Pairings are versatile: seafood like fish tacos, shrimp scampi or ceviche, where the citrus brightens without overwhelming. It tempers heat in Thai dishes, enhancing lemongrass and pairs just as happily with hot wings. Even a light cheese plate, fresh fruit or salty olives find a lively companion here.
But my most memorable encounter wasn’t at the table, it was on a mountainside. On our twenty-fifth anniversary trip, after sampling the local olives that bordered on the mythic themselves, my wife and I found ourselves near the Diktaion Cave, legendary birthplace of Zeus. At the village of Psychro, a fifteen-minute climb over ancient stones led us to the entrance.
Inside, the cool twilight explained why this place has been sacred for millennia. Stalactites and stalagmites formed frozen waterfalls, opening into a cavern vast beyond expectation. At its base lay a natural altar before a rock face like a giant in repose, still collecting coins left as offerings. I left a small tribute to the chthonic spirits myself, moved by the primeval silence.
Emerging back into the sunlight, a small bar stood ready with cold Mythos Radlers. After the underworld, after the mythic, that simple, hazy pint was the perfect return to the present.
Some trips just take you where you need to be. Some take you to places you never imagined. Mythos Radler welcomes you back from either.
